Do You Really Need Server-Side GTM? Or Is FOMO Driving the Decision?

LinkedIn can make you feel like you're missing something you never actually needed.
A recent conversation with an Australian business owner reminded me of this.
During our regular catch-up, he showed me a LinkedIn post about server-side integration. He got excited and asked me:
“Why don't we set this up for my website?”
Fair question.
But before jumping into implementation, I asked him a few things.
- Do you really need it?
- Will it bring additional value to your business right now?
- Will it actually make an impact?
He went quiet for a moment.
Here's why.
His business was only six months old. He'd been running ads for around four weeks with a small budget, and his website had barely 5,000 visitors.
At that stage, I wasn't convinced that server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) was the next thing he needed.
The problem with chasing every new trend
We see a new tool, tracking method or strategy on LinkedIn, and immediately start thinking about how to implement it.
But we often forget to ask whether it solves a real problem for our business.
Server-side tracking can be valuable. Depending on your setup, it can help with data collection, measurement and greater control over how data is processed.
But implementing it just because other businesses are doing it doesn't guarantee better results.
What should you focus on first?
Before investing in more advanced tracking, check the basics.
- Get your funnel right. Understand the journey from the first ad click to the final conversion.
- Check your tracking. Make sure your important events and conversions are being recorded correctly.
- Understand your limitations. Identify whether you're actually facing a problem that server-side integration could help solve.
- Know what you're trying to improve. Be clear about the outcome you expect before investing time and money.
Sometimes, fixing your existing setup can make a bigger difference than adding another layer of technology.
So, when do you actually need sGTM?
There's no universal visitor threshold that determines when a business needs server-side tracking.
Having 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 visitors doesn't automatically answer that question.
Your tracking requirements, advertising platforms, current setup, business goals and available resources all matter.
Sometimes, server-side integration is the right next step. Sometimes, you need to fix your funnel and existing tracking first.
The important thing is knowing the difference.
Don't just ask, “How can I implement this?”
Ask, “What problem will this solve for my business right now?”
I'll cover the factors that help determine when server-side integration makes sense in upcoming posts.
